Overall when taking into account target audience, we met expectation in most parts of our video. Our selected target audience was young males and females, within the teenage age range, this is a typical target audience for music videos within the hip-hop genre. In order to appeal to our target audience we built up a loving relationship between the two school students. From our feedback one of the main aspects in which people enjoyed from our video, was the split screen. The split screen helped us resemble the relationship between the pair, this was in keeping with both our song(genre) and target audience, as this part of the video is relatable to teenagers as relationship problems are a very prominent life problem experienced by many people aged between 16-24. This therefore helps our target audience identify with the characters and therefore engage with the narrative. Moreover, we also considered costume when meeting target audience expectations. We dressed our characters in urban youthful clothing, which was in keeping with both the genre and the target audience. Our actors wore clothes such as hoodies and joggers, this allowed younger viewers to be more engaged as the characters are relatable due to the clothing worn. THis will therefore, cause viewers to concentrate on the video more and therefore enjoy and appreciate certain aspects much more. We also used props such as skateboards and backpacks to further reinforce the hip hop genre and appeal to female and male teenagers. Furthermore, another aspect in which the audience enjoyed was the narrative. The narrative was included in order to engage the older range within our target audience, so for example 23-26 year olds. We did this due to the fact once you get to this age range it is probable that your style and interests are changing, this therefore means they may relate less to the characters in comparison to teenagers under the age of about 20. This narrative effectively ensures that the older section of our target audience don't get isolated. However, the basic story of the narrative is love based, this means it can be identifiable for any age range. This effectively almost allows also viewers to relate and sympathise with the actors. Giving them almost a personal relationship with the actors, once again make characters more identifiable for all age ranges. The reasoning behind us meeting our audience expectations was due to the fact we did a questionnaire before hand to see what elements of a hip hop music video are most important. Our feedback detailed that a relatable narrative and varied shot types was very important for many viewers when watching hip hop music videos. They also stated a urban feel is essential for a hip hop music video. As a result of this, we decided to include this in order to fulfill the target audience's desire for a strong narrative and a variety of shot types via both the skateboarding and dancing. The skateboarding and dancing props as well as urban costumes allow us to give the video a modernised feel.
In order to get additional feedback i decided to put up an online survey on social media sites. The survey detailed a number of questions based on what viewers thought went well and what could have been improved. The feedback i got suggested that there were a number of aspects of the video people liked and disliked. When taking into account positive comments, one aspect included was the general modern feel generated from the video. This was something we considered beforehand, and this urban feel was generated via props and costumes. Furthermore the general trend suggested that the narrative was also very important, this is something that challenges the general hip hop conventions but however is very effective in the sense it can engage an audience. This was once again something we considered beforehand. When taking into account bad comments, the general trend suggested that shots could have been steadier. As a result of this in future experience we will ensure that the tripod is adjusted properly in order to allow smooth shots.
Audience feedback
Within my music video the target audience was 16-24 year olds, as a result of this within our main product and ancillary texts we enured that both will appeal to our target audience. We did this via, setting, props, narrative, clothing and ensuring continuity between the products. Within both the products we as a group ensured everyone featured is pictured wearing 90’s urban like clothing. The fact that 90’s urban clothing is featured in both texts helps to almost mirror j.oles own style, this effectively anchor the target audience to the fact it's a j.cole production as his style is very unique. Moreover, when selecting setting in both texts we ensured that all settings connote an urban environment, to ensure our video and text was in keeping with the hip hop genre. The fact that we used graffiti walls frf the digipak and urban environment when filming the starting footage, helped illustrate and portray the urban street feeling we were going for. This atmosphere was once again is in keeping with j.coles work and can help symbolize j.cole as a rapper. In-addition, my narrative was based on a love, as the male character tries to show the female his true feelings. Within our digipak, we effectively mirrored this by showing, both charcters on contrasting pages on the digipak. The background behind both characters are both grafitti based, however they differ in the colour scheming. This could almost symbolize a connection but however a distant one at that. This mirrors and reinforces the narrarive. This combination of the main product and ancillary text is effective as it reinforces the feeling of desired love. Ultimately the combination of the main product and the ancillary text helps reinforce the narrative, J.coles style and the symbolisation of love effectively.
